Esports Recruiting Events: How to meet college coaches and prepare your elevator pitch

It’s esports recruiting event season and Stay Plugged In has you covered on everything you need to know to prepare for these recruiting events.

Esports recruiting events are a great opportunity for you to meet college coaches and learn about a variety of esports programs.

Prepare your elevator pitch

Be prepared to talk about yourself and come with questions for the coaches.

You will need to be able to communicate your skills and experience with your game, your education, and speak about what makes you a good recruit.

Practice writing a 60-second elevator pitch to say at an esports recruiting event. Take some time to write about these key points:

Define your skills

Talk about how long you have been playing the game, the role or heroes you play in the game, and if you have any experience playing on teams or in tournaments. Consider talking about how many hours you put into the game and how you’re refining your skills.

Talk about yourself as a student

Talk about your GPA, what extracurricular activities you participate in, any honors or AP classes you take, and any other notable accomplishments or activities.

Discuss what you are looking for in a program

Are you looking to get involved with the community? Are you looking for a lot of play time? How involved do you want to be?

Talk about yourself as a recruit

What sets you apart from other recruits and what makes you shine?

Consider things like:

  • Attitude

  • Determination/Dedication

  • Academics

  • Level of involvement

  • Leadership skills

Finally, write down what you plan to say and practice it with a parent, a coach, or a teacher.

Come with Questions

An esports recruiting event is a 2-way street. College esports recruiters are there to learn about you and you are there to learn about them.

Ask them questions about:

  • Tuition

  • Other academic scholarships and grants they can offer you

  • Program goals

  • What you can expect as a student in the program

  • Program / school culture

Know what you’re looking for

Consider what major offerings you are interested in, how far away you want to be from home, and what extracurriculars you want to get involved in.

Additionally, consider what’s important to you. Do you want a lot of playing time? Do you want to build close relationships with people across multiple esports titles? Do you want to be involved with community events and serving your community? Culture fit is extremely important.

Keep an open mind

Even if you may not be interested in a school at first glance, keep an open mind and learn about as many programs as you can!

Asking questions will also help you narrow down your search.

Talking to coaches and putting yourself out there can be nerve-wracking.

Realize that coaches are just people too. They understand the nervousness that comes with College Fairs and recruiting events.

Being nervous is normal and Stay Plugged In is here to help you find success.
