Stay Plugged In’s Rene Monteserin interviewed Putnam Science Academy earlier this week to discuss its esports program. Putnam Science Academy is a small private preparatory school located in Putnam, Connecticut. It’s located in the Northeast corner of Connecticut, just over one hour from Boston, and two and a half hours from New York City.
Aaron Jones has been the esports coach since the program began with Ibo Rivera joining in 2021. Putnam Science Academy (PSA) has been known primarily for its success on the traditional sports side, but Aaron and Ibo are looking to build an esports program that attracts more and more high-level esports players to the school.
PSA’s esports program is in its second season and has quickly moved into the top ten teams competing in the state. Aaron and Ibo have high expectations for this group and feel that top six is within reach for the upcoming season. The team currently competes in Rocket League, but will be looking to add multiple titles next season, expanding to include League of Legends, Valorant, FIFA, Madden, Call of Duty, and NBA2K.
The Mustang’s esports team has six players on their roster and currently competes in the PlayVS high school esports league. The team is looking for additional recruits that can help the program continue to grow. In a short time, PSA has already seen a couple of players be recruited by top colleges and expects that these players will have an opportunity to continue to play at the collegiate level should they choose.
