Stay Plugged In spoke with Timothy Ghazzawi from George C. Marshall High School about their esports program earlier this month. Based in Falls Church, Virginia, George C. Marshall High School competed in the Play VS league this past fall and is participating in the HSEL league this spring for Rocket League and Valorant. The school has two Valorant teams, but they do not distinguish between varsity or club.
Approximately 15 students participate in the program which began in the fall of 2021. Team captain, Camden Mertz, helps with recruiting players to the team for Rocket League and Ghazzawi noted that he is also a highly skilled player. Mertz had worked with Stay Plugged In with the hopes of being recruited to play esports at the collegiate level. Other notable players are Christopher Popelier and Rodman Nejat, and all three helped lead the team to a top 5 finish in the Play VS fall season.
Ghazzawi shared that some of the top schools they compete against include Tabb High School, Ocean Lakes High School, Tallwood High School, and Garfield High School. George C. Marshall High School’s team has been preparing for the spring season and playoffs that will take place in a couple of months.
